What are dentures?
Dentures are false teeth that replace missing teeth – they fit over the top of gums and sometimes they can come with metal clasps that clip onto the remaining teeth to help keep the denture in place. How do dentures help?
Dentures fill the spaces where teeth are missing – this can help give back someone’s ability to bite and eat food effectively; especially if they are missing back teeth (posterior dentition — refers to the premolars and molars, which are located at the back of the mouth and are used for chewing and grinding food).
Dentures will also help protect the remaining teeth, they do this by spreading the pressures/forces around the mouth more evenly – this helps prevent other teeth from having too much force applied; which could save the remaining teeth from cracking or fillings breaking, particularly if they are ‘weak’ or heavily restored.
Replacing the missing teeth also helps with some people’s ability to speak! Missing teeth may cause some patients to be uncomfortable talking or sadly, feel self-conscious; dentures could help them regain their confidence to smile again!
