Your hygiene visit at Bax Dental
What is oral hygiene?
A hygiene visit is one of the most important steps in maintaining lifelong oral health. During your appointment, our experienced hygienist will assess your individual needs and provide tailored advice on your daily oral care routine. This guidance is the cornerstone of your visit — forming good habits at home with effective brushing, interdental cleaning, and lifestyle choices is essential for preventing problems between check-ups.

Your appointment
As part of your assessment, the hygienist will gently measure the spaces between your teeth and gums using a rounded probe. This helps to detect early signs of gum disease, allowing us to take prompt, preventative action when needed. Education is one of the most valuable tools we can offer. Plaque removal is a daily task — crucial for preventing issues like gum disease, periodontitis, and even tooth loss.
We also offer personalised recommendations for interproximal cleaning tools — such as floss and TePe brushes — and will demonstrate correct brushing techniques using visual aids like disclosing solutions. This interactive element helps you see exactly where plaque is building up, so you can improve your technique at home.
Research has shown strong links between gum disease and serious health conditions including heart disease, stroke, dementia, and certain cancers — just to name a few. But don’t worry; you’re not alone.
At Bax Dental, our skilled hygiene team is here to support you with advanced tools, compassionate care, and expert guidance — helping you protect your smile and your overall health.

What is Biofilm?
Biofilm is more commonly known as dental plaque; it is a group of micro-organisms which stick together and adhere to the surface of the tooth. Biofilm contains bacteria which is damaging to our teeth & gums. Biofilm can lead to caries, periodontal disease and peri-implantitis.

Why we disclose the Biofilm? Be involved – get motived!
Disclosing colours and highlights the Biofilm
- Most of the biofilm is invisible to the naked eye
- Clinical theory: colour removed = biofilm removed
- It helps guide clinicians, to target areas
- Visual aid to help patients get more motivated to improve their own oral health.
Precise clean:
For clinicians, disclosing helps identify the exact locations of plaque build-up, eliminates guesswork and allowing for more efficient and targeted removal of biofilm.
Truly engage with your own oral health journey!
