Overview of Periodontal Disease and Its Impact on Oral Health

Periodontal disease, commonly referred to as gum disease, results from the accumulation of bacteria along the gum line, forming dental plaque. Consistent brushing and interdental cleaning are crucial to maintain optimal oral hygiene. If plaque is not adequately cleared, the gums begin to come away from the tooth, creating pockets where plaque can spread beneath the gum line. This process can lead to the destruction of the bone that supports the teeth, causing the gums to recede further and, ultimately, the teeth to loosen or fall out.

The connection between oral health and overall health underscores the importance of maintaining proper dental hygiene. Periodontal disease has been linked to several systemic health issues, including diabetes and cardiovascular disease. Additionally, gum disease may go unnoticed with many patients unaware of it until diagnosed by a hygienist or dentist.

Common Signs of Gum Disease
  • Bleeding gums when brushing or eating
  • Red, swollen gums
  • Persistent bad breath
  • Loose or shifting teeth
  • Receding gums
  • Sensitivity to hot or cold foods and drinks
Aims of treatment

Treatment aims to reduce bacteria around your teeth and prevent the disease from getting worse.

Benefits of treatment

Improving gum health can result in several benefits, such as:

  • A healthier, more lasting smile
  • Enhanced confidence with fresher breath
  • Reduced gum soreness and bleeding when brushing
  • Fewer loose teeth
  • Greater comfort while eating

We can also manage cosmetic gum concerns such as “gummy smiles” and recession around teeth where possible.
